Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

What is BHRT?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is essentially replicating your unique hormonal blueprint. It is introducing a hormone that is biologically identical in chemical structure, size, and shape to the human body’s hormone. Upon entering the body, they mimic the hormones the body naturally makes, thus being able to restore and maintain balance for fluctuating hormone levels when we age. Examples of BHRT are as below:

  • Progesterone

  • Estradiol

  • Estriol

  • DHEA

BHRT can be administered in different forms and the best results are seen with consistent adherence to your personalized treatment plan.

When looking for hormone replacement therapy, it is important to remember that the word “natural” is a highly unregulated term that can be misleading. Hormones that do not resemble our body’s natural human hormone can lead to concerns of increased risk for certain cancers, heart disease, and other worrisome side effects. Some commonly prescribed conventional hormones are from retrieved from animal sources and are still being labeled as “natural”. Animal sourced hormones are not identical to the hormones produced by the human body.

Who receives BHRT?

When women go through menopause, there is a significant drop in levels of progesterone and estrogen. Also, DHEA (an important precursor to our sex hormones) naturally decreases as we age. These hormones are responsible for not only fertility, periods, and pregnancy but also are crucial in maintaining healthy bone density, skin health, vaginal moisture, sleep quality, mood regulation, memory, healthy weight and more.

BHRT is often prescribed to help women replace and balance hormone levels during menopause; however, it can also be used for other hormonal imbalances during other stages of life as well.

Signs of hormonal imbalance:

  • Fatigue

  • Hot flashes & Night sweats

  • Insomnia

  • Decreased libido

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Headache & Migraines

  • Dry skin

  • Hair loss

  • Mood changes (anxiety, irritability)

  • Osteoporosis

  • Weight gain (especially in abdominal region)

  • Memory changes & Brain fog

Each individual’s experience with hormone imbalance can present in different manners and to different degrees.
